In the first term, Melanie Friend came and gave PJD a talk. It was an insightful day, giving me perspective into a particular way of working which I think has influenced me. Friend creates work over a long period of time, she uses medium/large format and thus, has a very particular and slow way of working, I work very quickly but I see advantages to slowing down when you have a connection into a world for a long period of time.
Friend demonstrated how the use of text, sound and image can come together to give an in-depth account or insight into a particular issue.
For example her book Border country juxtaposes image sound and text.
Below are some extracts from an article Friend wrote on her book Border Country. Found here. Obviously, Friend is dealing with a totally different issue to my project – she uses the sound to contrast against the ‘sterile calm’ of these unnatural rooms in the detaining centre. She plays with the English language to emphasise the situation these immigrants are in. The stories of these people in the detaining centre contrast with the surreal surroundings, which you would not have received without the sound.
