Sound and Image
Richards is a great story teller – an artist that I have looked to since being a teenager. He creates individual stories, setting narrative and tone that compels the viewer and more importantly connects the viewer through relating the subject matter to the viewer – through him. Above is one of my favourite videos Richards created – A Gift for Living. His website has a body of videos where he has collated images, sound and text together. The variations in pace and sound illustrate the vast ways the artist can control the tone and focus of a piece of work. Sequence of time, sequence of pace, sound, movement, minor/major etc etc. I remember a discussion in the symposium about how contextualising your images within a video brings control over how the images are seen.
